Making personalized cups out of old wine bottles is a great way to recycle old wine bottles that would normally end up in the trash and create a piece of drinkware that both handcrafted and unique. Sure, you could simply go to the store and buy a set of pre-made wine glasses, but this project is not only more environmentally friendly, but gives you a piece of drinkware that one can truly be proud of. Be careful when undertaking this project, it requires the cutting of glass which can be extremely dangerous. Follow the instructions carefully and use the necessary safety precautions when building your own personalized cups.
Start off by choosing the right wine bottle for the project. Thicker bottles have less of a chance of breaking and cutting you. It is also recommended that you use a bottle that is flat on the bottom. Many bottles of wine have a dimple on the bottom which could make the project that much more difficult. The next step is cutting the bottle; make sure you are wearing gloves and all other necessary safety items before proceeding to this step. There are many tools that can be used to cut glass. We recommend a consistent scoring line around the bottle for the best results. Once you have an even line scored across the top of the bottle, heat the empty wine bottle up with a candle and drip cold water onto the area until it suddenly breaks apart. Breaking the bottle might take awhile at first, but there is a knack to the process which simply takes practice.
Smoothing out the edges is next and the most tedious part of the undertaking. Breaking wine bottles obviously create sharp edges, and you don’t want to cut your mouth every time you take a drink, so it’s necessary to smooth them out. Using a Dremel tool, rough up the sharp cut using a Silicon Carbide conical grinding tip. Make sure you wear a dust mask during this part of the process, breathing glass is not good. Continue sanding the bottle of wine with different grit sandpaper until it’s smooth enough for use. The final step should be hand sanding with 200 grit sandpaper until your personalized cup is satisfactory. Add finishing touches including decals, initials or anything else to make the personalized cup truly your own. Etch your initials or someone special for a great gift.
